According to the New York State Department of Health and Environmental Working Group (EWG), residents of Northport, NY may encounter the following contaminants, among others, in their tap water:

1. Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS): PFAS, often termed "forever chemicals," are synthetic compounds used in industrial applications and consumer products. They're persistent in the environment and the human body, and exposure has been linked to health issues such as cancer and hormonal disruptions. A study indicated that over a million Long Island residents consume water with PFAS levels exceeding the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) health advisory standards.

2. 1,4-Dioxane: This industrial solvent is classified as a "likely human carcinogen". It contaminates groundwater due to industrial wastewater discharges and runoff. In East Northport, 12 out of 16 water samples tested positive for 1,4-dioxane.

3. Haloacetic Acids (HAA5 and HAA9): These are byproducts formed when disinfectants like chlorine are added to tap water. Long-term exposure to elevated levels of haloacetic acids may increase the risk of certain cancers.

4. Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs): TTHMs are another group of disinfection byproducts that can form during water treatment with chlorine. They've been associated with potential health risks, including cancer.

5. Chromium (Hexavalent): Used in various industrial processes, hexavalent chromium is a known carcinogen. It was detected in all 26 water samples tested in East Northport.

6. Lead and Heavy Metals: Aging infrastructure can introduce lead and other heavy metals into the water supply, posing risks to neurological and developmental health, especially in children.

7. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): These compounds, including substances like 1,1-Dichloroethane, can originate from industrial discharges and have been detected in local water supplies.

8. Radionuclides: Naturally occurring radioactive materials can leach into groundwater, potentially affecting drinking water quality.
